Don't let anyone tell you that playing with the right equipment doesn't make a difference in your game, because it does. Getting a set of affordable custom-fit clubs was the key for me in finally getting my index down into single digits ... along with a few lessons and some serious work, of course.

Similarly, the difference between playing a professional ball like the Titleist ProV1 and a low-cost, low-quality alternative adds up to anywhere from 1-2 strokes per round, if not more.

If playing your absolute best and posting the scores to show for it isn't worth paying a few extra dollars to you, then fine. But it is to me, even if these days I'm lucky to play once every couple weeks or so.

The real decision is whether to choose the softer, more forgiving ProV1 or the longer, less workable ProV1x. Both are professional quality ... which one is right for you depends on your game and preferences.

I received a dozen Titleist Pro V1 balls 6 years ago when I won a long drive contest at a driving range in Connecticut....I tried them out and I've been with the Pro V1 ever since. The ball has obviously evolved a little bit in the last 6 years, but it keeps getting better and better each time.

The Pro V1 is long off the tee, but the real feature is the incredibly soft feel and its ability to really bite on the green. Your basic Top Flite or Pinnacle golf ball is built to go straight and far. With that combination, you lose the ability to control the ball on your approach and around the green as balls will often roll off the back - not the case with the Pro V1. It gives you unrivaled control around the greens and the feel is indescribable. This is a great ball for anyone who can put together a solid round!

I'm not exactly a scratch golfer, but my equipment is more geared toward a scratch rather than a golfer of the handicap I actually am. That's because I'm seeking to become scratch, and don't want to be dependent upon any what I call "crutch" equipment, but want my improvement to be skill based.

I've found the ball, at least for me, is the golfer's most important piece of equipment. I also chuckle at guys that will drop $400 on a driver, a club they probably can't hit very well, but will nickle and dime for whatever balls they can get away with buying. Yes, I realize balls have to be replaced much more often than clubs, but saving a few dollars isn't worth the trouble. And you can buy x-outs and practice Pro-V1 balls that are exactly the same as in the new box, except for cosmetic stuff.

I'm not a great golfer and have days of muffing, slicing, hooking, topping, and other golf evils as do most other persons who don't play that often. However, sometimes the shots actually work and the ball goes as visualized. I've found golf to be highly influenced by mental attitude and confidence is the secret to many of those decent shots. With Titleist ProV-1 balls, somehow I have considerably more confidence that the ball will behave than with other brands. This has been true for Titleist balls for me for 22 years or so, and whether or not there is any technical reason why this is true (even if it's because they're expensive), it works this way for me. Whenever I try new snazzy brands, less expensive brands, or used balls picked up off of the fairway, things seem to go sour in a hurry. These balls are the way to go if you are serious about golf.
The pro v1X's have a softer feel and a little less spin. If you want a harder cover and more spin go with the V1.
At $5 a ball you want to be sure you are decent enough to not loose a bunch each round.
But if you dont need to worry about loosing balls buy these and you will see a great difference in your game.

This is the best ball you can get. For amateurs, this ball gives the best combination of distance, spin, and feel around and on the greens. Goes long and is durable! The Pro V1 will go farther because it will compress more for slower swing speeds, but because it is softer, and has more spin, it will also make those mis-hits of yours do a banana out of bounds. Stick with the V1x. Almost as far, less spin on drives, great feel and spin around and on the greens.

The Polara Story
Two scientists, Daniel Nepela and Fred Holmstrom, developed the original Polara golf ball. The Polara's dimple pattern was unique, having six rows of normal dimples on its equator, but very shallow dimples elsewhere. The asymmetrical dimple pattern was a breakthrough in aerodynamic design that helped the ball self-adjust its spin-axis during the flight and thus enabled the ball to correct slices and hooks in flight. The original Polara patent was filed Oct 2, 1972 and it issued June 25, 1974.

The Polara golf ball was first produced in 1975 by PGA/Victor, with sales starting in 1977. Because the Polara actually corrected hooks and slices it posted strong sales in its first year. However, after extensive testing, the USGA concluded that the Polara golf ball did correct hooks and slices and thus refused to approve the ball for tournament play, ruling that it wouldreduce the skill required to play golf. In 1978, the manufacturers sued the USGA on antitrust grounds.

As litigation wound its ways through the courts the USGA changed the 300 year old Rules of Golf by inserting the Symmetry Rule in 1981, requiring that a ball must essentially perform the same regardless of where on the ball's surface it is struck or how it is placed on the tee. The new USGA rule banned Polara golf balls from USGA sanctioned tournament play. Then in 1985 the USGA agreed to a settlement of $1.4M and the Polara ball was removed from the market, becoming a part of golf history.

In 2005 Pounce Sports purchased the rights to the original Polara golf ball and reintroduced it on a small scale. In 2009 Aero-X Golf, Inc. acquired the Polara technology. After extensive research and development, Aero-X Golf determined exactly how and why the original Polara ball corrected hooks and slices. With this understanding Aero-X Golf, Inc was able to improve upon the original Polara design.

I purchased these golf balls after a recommendation from a friend. After using them this past weekend at my local course, here is my take on these self-correcting golf balls.

One thing is for certain, these golf balls do reduce hook and slice. There is absolutely no doubt about it. I naturally hit a fade on most of my tee shots, and just watching the flight of the golf ball you can see that the Polara want's to start fading but after only 40 or 50 yards it stops dead in its track and goes straight as an arrow. The golf balls seem to roll much farther as a result, so some could even say that these are extra distance balls.

They even make a big difference with your irons from short range. When you turn the side-stamp of the ball perpendicular to the green and use a lofted iron within 120yds or so, the dimples create more backspin than a normal ball would. These balls are a bit quirky. They definitely do what they are advertised to do. They go straight unless the golfer really hits a seriously bad shot. You can actually see them "correcting" the trajectory in mid-flight. So when I am having a slicing or hooking day, I quickly switch to the Polaras. However, they also are capable of delivering some odd results. For one thing, they are prone to dive down rather precipitously. Not sure what makes this happen. They also bounce and roll forever. This is good news on a well-hit drive; they bounce and roll and add serious yardage to a good shot. However, this is bad news when hitting to a green. I just stopped using them around greens. For example, if I hit a 100-yard shot with my pitching wedge as I usually do, the Polara will hit the green, bounce twice, and then roll for another 15 yards! This can seriously foul up one's strategy around greens.

In the golf ball design world of air pressure, turbulence, and aerodynamics, surface structure of the surface is a essential design element. There are several historical events that have contributed the design and make-up of the golf ball. Evolving over a period covering hundreds of years, a better design and composition of the golf ball has been achieved, based on scientific understanding. The humble golf ball is a good example of the development of the history of aeronautical engineering.

In the beginning of the game of golf on the eastern coast of Scotland,nearly all of the players used ancient golf clubs and balls in order to play the game of golf which was a more chaotic game than it is today.In these early days, the first golf clubs and golf balls are made of wood. feather golf ball was used for the first time and made popular. This version of the golf ball gained the nickname of the "Featherie". This feather golf ball was a handcraftedhand made golf ball made with goose feathers securely pressed into a horse or cowhide outer casing. This was done while the ball was still wet. As the ball dried out, the the out skin would shrink and the feathers expanded to create a hardened golf ball. Because these types of golf balls were specially handcrafted, they could easily cost more than the golf clubs. It is not surprising that, only the wealthy people could afford to play the game of golf during this early period. After the 'Featherie' the next version, to gain in popularity was the Guttie golf ball. This prehistoric form of golf ball was constructed from the rubber like sap from the Gutta Percha tree that can be found in the tropics. These Guttie balls could be readily shaped into a sphere when hot. When they became cooler, they kept their shape and could then be used as a golf ball. With its rubber nature, Guttie balls could be cheaply produced and could be easily repaired by reheating and reshaping.

In a comparison between the two earliest forms of golf balls, the feather golf ball was said to go a longer distance than than the rubber Guttie. The reason for the different distances was eventually identified as being due to the difference in surfaces. The smooth surface of the Guttie reduces the capacity of the golf ball to travel over greater distance.
With this new knowledge, the makers of golf balls eventually designed with balls with the "dimples" that are found on modern golf balls in use today.

Dimples are crafted onto golf balls so as to reduce the aerodynamic drag, which acts on the ball and is higher if it were totally smooth.
The cause of this is because smooth balls, when sailing through the air, leave a large pocket of low-pressure air in its wake so creating drag. The drag performs as a brake and the ball slows down. But in contrast, by having dimples on golf balls, the difference in pressure gets lowered and the drag is reduced. These dimples create turbulence in the air surrounding the golf ball. This, in turn, makes the air flow around the golf ball more closely. consequently, the air flows in to the wake created by the ball instead of flowing past it.The result is a smaller wake and less drag. Consequently the ball travels a longer distance.

Dimples also help players to put backspin on a shot so making the golf ball break off on the putting green. The concept of placing dimples on golf balls can be traced back to the Gutta Percha phase of development. It was Coburn Haskell who introduced the one-piece rubber cored ball encased in a Gutta Percha coating. It was during this time that players first noticed how their shots became more and more predictable the more they used the same ball. They noticed that the more the balls became scuffed the more accurate and further they could hit it. When William Taylor applied the dimple pattern to a Haskell ball in 1905, golf balls finally took on their modern shape. So the dimples came into being. From that time on, dimpled golf balls were officially used in every golf ournament. In 1921, the dimpled golf balls took on a standard size and weight.Today, there is a big choice of golf balls to fit different golf games and conditions. Some golf balls offer reater control, while some others provide greater distance. However else these golf balls vary, they all have one fearure in common and that is the dimple. History of Golf Balls

Even though it was documented that a John Daly played with a wooden ball in 1550, by 1618 the first hand-crafted goose feather golf ball, wrapped in horse or cow hide, was introduced. To make it harder, it was made wet so that the leather shrunk and feathers expanded.

In 1849, the Gutta Percha ball 'Guttie' was introduced by Rev Adam Paterson of St. Andrews, which was made from the rubber-like sap of the gutta tree found in the tropics. The rubber was heated up to be formed into a sphere and could easily be repaired by re-heating it. This ball was not known for traveling as far as the feather ball.

By 1880, Gutties were being produced with patterns on the outside to improve their distance, and by 1890 they were being molded with machines. The most common pattern was the 'Bramble', which had raised bumps around the outside of it. Soon Dunlop and other companies began mass production of balls, which killed any handcrafted ball businesses.

Coburn Haskell introduced the one-piece rubber-cored ball in 1898, which was then used in the British and U.S. opens by 1901 after being proven to be superior by adding 20 yards to a drive. Looking just like Gutties, they had a solid rubber core and were wrapped in thread incased with a gutta percha sphere.

In 1905, William Taylor applied the dimple pattern to the Haskell ball, which maximized lift and minimized drag - and created the first modern golf ball. In 1906 Goodrich introduced the pneumatic ball, which had a compressed air core which tended to expand from heat. Only after others tried cork and metal cores did Spalding introduce the first two-piece Executive ball in 1972.

R&A and USGA in 1921 standardized the weight and size of golf balls. But the two officiating bodies had different regulations, which meant that different sizes were being used in the U.S. and Europe.

Today, there is a wide variety of balls made for certain players or circumstances which offer more control over aspects like distance or spin.

In order for a golf ball manufacturing company to sell their golf balls to the public, each ball must pass the golf ball testing requirements provided by the United States Golf Association (USGA). Each ball is measured, weighed and examined in a number of different areas in order to make sure it is up to standard with the USGA golf ball standards. Here is a list of the specifications which must be met before any golf ball becomes available for actual use:

Weight- Appendix III of the USGA golf ball testing requirements states that a ball must not weigh more than 1.620 ounces. There is no minimum weight requirement for a golf ball, therefore a ball can be as light as the manufacturers would like.

Size- The required size for a golf ball to pass this part of testing states the ball must have a diameter of at least 1.680 inches. There is no maximum size for a golf ball and as long as it does not exceed the weight requirements stated above, the golf ball will be conformed (legal to use).

Spherical Symmetry- This category is included to simply state that the ball should be designed and manufactured as though it is symmetrical in shape.

Initial Velocity- This is a component of the test, which is carried out on equipment approved by the USGA, to ensure that each golf ball meets the initial velocity specifications of the test. The intention of this category is to limit the speed of the golf ball off the initial hit.

Overall Distance Standards- This area of the test was designed to state the limitations of the overall distance (including the roll) that a ball can travel in specific circumstances. The overall distance was recently changed from 296.8 yards (including a 5.6 yard tolerance) to 320 yards (including a 3 yard rolling tolerance).

Once all the conditions and specifications are met, the golf balls will be manufactured and free for the public to purchase and use. If a golf ball fails to meet any aspect of this test, it will be considered inadequate and will not proceed in the manufacturing process.

What's inside a golf ball? The answer is no longer simple.

Most companies these days use all different types of materials in the core and even the cover of their balls. All golf balls are designed with dimple patterns on the cover to optimize the balls aerodynamics. The dimples can control many different aspects of shots like distance, velocity, spin control, straightness and trajectory.

There are two types of drag behind a sphere when it is airborne, laminar and turbulent. Laminar flow occurs over a non-dimpled ball and the air separates very early in front of the ball, resulting in less carry. A turbulent flow will occur with a dimpled ball because it causes the air to not split as soon and increases the pressure drag. Pressure drag is the air separated behind the ball.

The surface roughness allows the flow to change from laminar to turbulent, resulting in more energy and allowing the flow to remain attached longer than laminar. In other words, the dimples allow the ball to be carried farther by the air.

A golf ball's dimples also help with the ball's lift because they can keep the flow 'attached' while the ball spins backward. The backspin increases the speed of the upper surface of the ball with less friction than the bottom of the ball, which decreases in speed due to more friction. The air that passes over the ball gets dragged around to the back of the ball, producing its lift.

Once the ball loses its carry and gravity takes over, it begins to drop significantly due to the air flow behind the ball.
